When Dee Banagan joined last year's "Making Strides" fund-raising walk for breast cancer, she was there to support Valerie Tabak, a colleague in Guilderland, Albany County. This year, she was surprised to find herself in a pink "survivor" shirt as well.

Banagan, shown with Tabak on the cover, was one of thousands of New York State United Teachers members who joined the Oct. 19 walks around the state - raising more than half a million dollars.

Despite the icy rain, walkers turned out in even greater numbers than last year, with many simply taping plastic wrap over their hand-written signs in honor of survivors and lost loved ones. It was that kind of steely determination that captured the spirit of the day, as unionists refused to call it a rainout and marched to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer.

For the second year, NYSUT was a statewide flagship sponsor in the annual American Cancer Society fund-raiser.
