Bulletin notes busing changes November 5 , 2003 Now anyone behind the wheel of a school bus is subject to all the pre-service and refresher training and medical exam requirements of drivers who work for districts. Effective in July, the state Board of Regents amended its regulations to include companies that contract with school districts to transport students and to those who drive for BOCES. The Regents also increased qualifications for bus monitors and attendants to include more training requirements and certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation when it's required by a student's Individualized Education Program. In general, those employed as of July 1 have one year to complete requirements, while those hired after July 1 must be certified in CPR, and complete three hours of pre-service instruction and a 10-hour basic training course before assuming duties. New York State United Teachers has produced an information bulletin explaining changes. It is available on the NYSUT Web site at www.nysut.org/research/bulletins/schoolbusdrivers.html.
