Union program helps teaching assistants

May 21, 2003

Beginning in the fall of 2003, the New York State United Teachers Education and Learning Trust will offer test-prep programs and materials for candidates applying for a state teaching assistant certificate.

The programs will help members taking the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills. Developed by the National Evaluation Service, the ATAS will be required for candidates for a state teaching assistant certificate after Feb. 1, 2004. In addition, if the local school district approves the ATAS as its local assessment, the test may be used to meet No Child Left Behind act requirements for paraprofessionals in Title I schools.

Participants will receive instruction in topics to be tested and test-taking skills. A compact disc will include the basic instruction from the workshop, with practice questions. To schedule the five- to six-hour test-prep workshop, contact NYSUT's ELT at (800) 528-6208.

Beginning this fall, the test will be offered five times a year at numerous locations around the state. There is no limit to the number of times the test can be taken.
