Cheryl Costa had to do something to stay warm as she and dozens of other UFT paras and secretaries joined colleagues from across the state Oct. 20 marching through Lake Placid to raise money for the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer.

So she started singing. Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head went with the snowflakes that greeted marchers at 8:30 a.m. and then turned to rain.

Costa considers herself lucky. No one in her family has contracted the disease, which strikes one of nine women. "You always know someone, and I'll do whatever I can to support finding a cure," Costa said.

Costa was part of a large UFT contingent at the statewide union's School-Related Professionals conference. More than 22,000 paraprofessionals and clerical members are in the United Federation of Teachers, New York State United Teachers' affiliate in New York City. The three-day conference was devoted to on-the-job training.
