YOUR UNION MENTOR

Many New York State United Teachers members have been on the job for three years or less. This column appears periodically to address your union- or work-related questions.

Does NYSUT have an association with any tax preparers or companies?

No. Members who are enrolled in the NYSUT-endorsed Ernst & Young's Financial Counseling Program may call the company for answers to questions about taxes. The company does not prepare tax returns. To enroll, or for more information, call NYSUT Member Benefits at (800) 626-8101. (Source: NYSUT Member Benefits Department).

I teach science in a rural district. Is there any way I can find out what science teachers across the state are doing?

As a response to subject-specific initiatives from the State Education Department, New York State United Teachers created nine subject area committees. Each committee includes NYSUT members from elementary, secondary and higher education from across the state.

The NYSUT Subject Area Committee for Science meets regularly to discuss changes in the science curriculum and advise NYSUT on these changes. The committee also holds workshops periodically to inform science teachers of what their colleagues across the state are doing.

In addition to science, NYSUT has subject area committees for social studies; mathematics; languages other than English; health, physical education and family and consumer science; English Language Arts; elementary education; career development, occupational studies and technology; and arts. I plan on retiring soon. Lately, I've been feeling drained and I don't know if I can stick it out another five years. I really enjoy teaching, but my heart isn't in it.

Situations like this are more common than you think. Personal and professional obligations can sometimes stretch us thin. Support groups can be helpful - remember to look into the group's specific focus. You also might benefit from stress or time management seminars. The NYSUT Social Services Department can check to see if you have EAP benefits, and if not, help you find suitable services in your area.

NYSUT Social Services specialists are available to assist retirees and in-service members. For more information, or to submit related questions, e-mail socsvcs@nysutmail.org. (Source: NYSUT Social Services).
