State University hospitals and psychologists came out winners in the health care package approved recently by the governor and legislative leaders.

While all the publicity surrounded the millions won for retention and recruitment of health care workers, New York State United Teachers made sure SUNY hospitals and psychologists will benefit as well.

SUNY's financially ailing hospitals will receive $61.5 million in direct aid and millions more over a three-year period for worker training and other costs.

In another major victory, NYSUT convinced negotiators to drop a cost-saving measure that would have changed the reimbursement system for providers who have patients qualifying for both Medicare and Medicaid services. Existing billing guidelines for such "crossover" patients will continue, thanks to NYSUT's legislative efforts. NYSUT represents members of the New York State Psychological Association.
