| Marymount Manhattan College adjuncts choose NYSUT as potential bargaining agent May 25, 2006 ALBANY, N.Y. May 25, 2006 – Adjuncts at Marymount Manhattan College have voted to affiliate with New York State United Teachers and its national affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers, as part of their efforts to win respect and have a meaningful voice in workplace issues, NYSUT announced today. Marymount Manhattan College is located on East 71 st Street in Manhattan. In a representation election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board, Marymount Manhattan College adjuncts voted 95-23 to unionize and have NYSUT/AFT represent them in negotiations for a contract with the college. "Adjuncts at Marymount Manhattan now have a seat at the table and — through their new union — a voice in the decisions that impact them," said NYSUT President Richard C. Iannuzzi. "Like a growing number of adjuncts on campuses across the state, Marymount Manhattan adjuncts understand that union representation means they'll get the respect they deserve, along with higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions." Iannuzzi said NYSUT will continue to work to organize adjuncts at colleges and universities across the state. Iannuzzi noted the campaign was "without rancor" and commended Marymount Manhattan administrators for maintaining neutrality. "We look forward to sitting down with the adjuncts and the college and negotiating a fair contract," Iannuzzi said. Marymount Manhattan College represents the latest in a series of colleges and universities where adjunct professors have voted to be represented by NYSUT. The college presently has 261 adjuncts. NYSUT expects the NLRB to formally certify the election results in 10 days. NYSUT, the largest union in New York State, represents more than 535,000 classroom teachers and other school employees; academic and professional faculty at the state's community colleges, State University of New York and City University of New York; and other education and health professionals. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO. -30- |
