NEA/NY delegates vote to unite organization with New York State United Teachers
NYSUT delegates vote next weekend on unity, to create 560,000 member union

April 29, 2006

Delegates to the annual Delegate Assembly of the National Education Association of New York (NEA/NY) in Rochester voted this morning to unite their 35,000 member union with the 525,000 member New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).

The vote total of 463 Yes, in favor of unity, and 124 No, was by delegates representing more than 180 NEA/NY locals.

"This is a wonderful advance for our members, students and schools," said Robin Rapaport, President of NEA/NY. "We will have a stronger more united voice on education issues in Albany and our members will have access to new resources and programs available through NYSUT. We are truly stronger, together."

New York State United Teachers President Richard C. Iannuzzi said the vote by the NEA/NY delegates to unite with NYSUT was a great step forward.

"This vote takes the unity process to a new level," said Iannuzzi. "Obviously, NYSUT delegates still have to vote for unification at our convention next week, but I'm optimistic our delegates share the desire to move ahead. When our two unions unite, New York will have one statewide union, a strong, unified voice for educators and an even more vital voice for students in every school district in the state."

The 525,000 member NYSUT will hold its Representative Assembly in Rochester May 4-6. NYSUT delegates are scheduled to vote on unification Friday, May 5.
