NYSUT praises state Legislature for veto overrides

April 26, 2006

ALBANY, N.Y. April 26, 2006 - New York State United Teachers President Richard C. Iannuzzi praised the state Legislature for overriding Gov. Pataki's budget vetoes.

"The state Senate and Assembly have restored a sense of rationality to the state Capitol," Iannuzzi said. "The vetoes would have eviscerated teacher professional development programs, public universities and health care systems. The vetoes were wrong, but now the Legislature has set things right."

NYSUT Executive Vice President Alan B. Lubin said he was particularly pleased that the Legislature had restored funding for higher education.

"Our public colleges and universities are the engines that can drive economic development across the state - particularly upstate," Lubin said. "The vetoes would have pulled the spark plugs from those engines, but the Senate and Assembly have helped to ensure those engines will be up and running stronger than ever."
