Syracuse adjuncts choose NYSUT as potential bargaining agent

Dec. 22, 2005

SYRACUSE, N.Y. December 22, 2005 – Adjuncts at Syracuse University have voted to affiliate with New York State United Teachers and its national affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers, as part of their efforts to win respect and have a meaningful voice in workplace issues, NYSUT announced today.

In a representation election presided over by the National Labor Relations Board, Syracuse University adjuncts voted 182-122 to unionize and have NYSUT/AFT represent them in negotiations for a contract with the university. The NLRB announced the NYSUT victory late Wednesday afternoon.

"This vote means that adjuncts at Syracuse will now have a seat at the table and – through their new union – a voice in the decisions that impact them," said NYSUT President Richard Iannuzzi. "We welcome the University's adjuncts into the 'union family' and look forward to helping them win the respect they deserve, along with higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions."

In addition, Iannuzzi noted the campaign was "without rancor" and commended Syracuse University administrators for maintaining neutrality. "We look forward to sitting down with the adjuncts and the University and negotiating a fair contract."

About 650 adjuncts – any adjunct instructors who taught in the Fall 2005, Summer 2005 or anytime in the 2004-05 academic year – were eligible to vote in the representation election. NYSUT expects the NLRB to formally certify the election results in 10 days.

NYSUT, the largest union in New York State, represents more than 525,000 classroom teachers and other school employees; academic and professional faculty at the state's community colleges, State University of New York and City University of New York; and other education and health professionals. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO.
