| NYSUT praises UFT contract agreement October 3, 2005 ALBANY, N.Y. October 3, 2005 - New York State United Teachers President Richard C. Iannuzzi today lauded the tentative contract settlement that awards New York City teachers a 15 percent pay raise over the next 52 months. "This contract achieves the goals the United Federation of Teachers set out to reach some 2 ½ years ago," Iannuzzi said. "It's been a long, hard road but the UFT showed tremendous solidarity and resolve. From day one, the UFT fought for a contract that would not only help union members, but also improve the city's public schools. The UFT's great president Randi Weingarten did an extraordinary job to make sure this contract does just that. Like the Yankees, the UFT did it." "The tentative agreement reached today with Mayor Bloomberg will help New York City to continue to attract and retain the best teachers, and to make even greater progress toward meeting the higher academic standards set by the Regents," Iannuzzi added. The UFT, representing some 140,000 active and retired active educators, is NYSUT's largest local union. UFT members have been working without a contract since May 2003. NYSUT, the largest union in New York State, represents more than 525,000 classroom teachers and other school employees; academic and professional faculty at the state's community colleges, State University of New York and City University of New York; and other education and health professionals. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO.
