The sham Bush Medicare law that steamrolled through Congress last year hurts all working people and their families, as well as retirees.
It requires you to pay in to a system you may never be eligible to use. The law may force you to provide more support and care for older parents; it cuts deeply into their fixed incomes and jeopardizes their ability to live independently. It also threatens disability benefit coverage for all workers.
You need to know about this deeply flawed law, what your union is doing to replace it and what you must do to help.
The Bush Medicare Law is bad news for younger workers because:
- It eliminates guaranteed health care benefits.
- It threatens Medicare's role in disability benefits for younger workers.
- It lets drug companies and HMOs make decisions about your patient care.
- All workers are forced to pay a Medicare tax — even if they are ineligible to collect the benefits.
- It penalizes workers who have nest eggs and supplemental health insurance by forcing them to pay more out of pocket.
- It shifts the burden of economic and health care services from employers to the pockets of the workers.
What do we want?
- Reverse the new Medicare law and strengthen the traditional program.
- Fight for guaranteed health care benefits for workers and retirees.
- Get the word out to our members and the general public about this deeply flawed law.
- Continue the fight against the White House and Congress turning health care over to private insurance markets and drug industry profiteers.
Take Action!
