President's Message...
Welcome to the web site of the Glen Cove Teachers' Association. The GCTA is a labor union that represents approximately 280 certified educational professionals dedicated to serving the children in preschool through twelfth grade attending the City of Glen Cove School District. Our membership includes teachers, guidance counselors, speech pathologists, social workers, therapists, and psychologists.
Our association was founded in March of 1944. Our local is proud to be part of the 600,000 membership of New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). Our national affiliates are the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Education Association (NEA), and the American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).
The Glen Cove Teachers' Association is governed by our By-Laws and Constitution and run democratically by an Executive Board. The officer positions of president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary are elected biannually by the general membership. Twelve building representatives are elected annually by the members in their buildings. The officers and building representatives constitute the Executive Board. The Executive Board meets monthly and is the sole authority of this association.
The GCTA also has numerous chairpersons who are responsible for specific jobs in promoting our goals. These positions are appointed by the president and approved by the Executive Board. Our advancement as an association comes from the dedication and leadership of our Executive Board and our chairpersons. Our strength comes from the active participation of each and every member.
The Glen Cove Teachers' Association is dedicated to the welfare and professional interest of all its members. We give voice to their legitimate professional, economic and social aspirations. We strive to improve the quality of the services we provide. We support one another in our growth and promote democracy and the protection of basic human rights.
We are dedicated to maintain a fair professional relationship with the Glen Cove School District with the goal of ensuring the most productive instructional conditions for teachers and the best possible learning opportunities for our students.
We recognize the need to maintain and build a healthy and meaningful relationship with the community we serve. We promote and encourage communication between parents and teachers in order to establish a cooperative relationship that promotes the highest possible student achievement.
Please feel free to explore our web site. I hope it can be a useful resource to you.
