PROGRAM INFORMATION

The test-preparation workshops are available for:

  • Superintendent Conference Days
  • Local and Regional Union Conferences
  • Teacher Center Programs
  • Other Staff Development Opportunities
The workshops are available in one of two formats:
  • 2-3 hour sessions
  • 1 full day 6 hour session

Participation will be kept to a maximum of 30-35 participants. The workshops offer a positive, interactive classroom climate.


WHO MUST TAKE THE TEST?

The New York State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (NYSATAS) will be required for all candidates who apply for a State teaching assistant certificate after February 1, 2004. A candidate must submit evidence of having achieved a satisfactory level of performance on the NYSATAS.

NYSATAS may also be used to satisfy the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requirement for paraprofessionals working in Title I schools.

IMPORTANT: Under New York State policy, teaching assistants who are State-certified and have received tenure have met the NCLB criteria for the assessment option.

WORKSHOP CONTENT

The six-hour workshop will provide participants with test-taking strategies, some basic instruction in the topics to be tested and an opportunity to try out practice questions.

The workshop will include basic information about each of the following topics:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Mathematics
  • Instructional Support

INTERACTIVE CD OFFER

The CD will allow test takers to study the materials for the test and try out practice questions at their own pace.
