NYSUT and Excelsior College
Master's Degree Partnership Programs

The NYSUT Education and Learning Trust has partnered with Excelsior College to offer the college's Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program. The Liberal Studies program combines the college's online course offerings with the Effective Teaching Program's site-based and online courses to fulfill professional certification requirements for most certificate titles.

The program requires 33 credits, 15 of which can be completed through courses offered through the Effective Teaching Program and 18 through courses offered by Excelsior College at the college's established tuition rate.

The program is divided into three parts or tiers:

Tier I: 4 Core Courses = 12 credits through Excelsior College

Tier II: Individualized Study = 15 credits through NYSUT - ELT

Literacy Concentration

  • EDU 726: Reading Comprehension
  • EDU 717: Beginning Reading (Elementary focus) OR EDU 801: Reading and Writing Across the Content Areas (Grades 4-12)
  • EDU 728: Writing as Learning OR RDG 663: Creating a Balanced Reading and Writing Program

Six credits selected from the approved list of electives.

Special Education Concentration

  • SED 660: TEACH for Exceptional Students
  • EDU 729: Inclusion: Education for All
  • SED 672: Developing Multiple Intelligences

Six credits selected from the approved list of electives.

Curriculum and Assessment Concentration

  • EDU 678A: Assessing Student Learning: What You Need to Know
  • EDUC 506I: Raising Expectations for All Students: Standards and Assessment
  • EDUC 537: Critical Thinking OR EDU 712: Problem-Based Learning

Six credits selected from the approved list of electives.

Tier III: Thesis = 6 credits

Students work directly with a college advisor to identify, design, and complete a culminating thesis project. Each student is assigned a mentor to assist them in fulfilling thesis requirements. See www.excelsior.edu for additional information about the Thesis requirement.
