| About NYSUT Professional Development
The Education and Learning Trust is NYSUT's primary means of delivering professional development to its members. Research and conventional wisdom demonstrate that professional development is one of the most important factors in improving schools and increasing student achievement. We hope you take advantage of the professional development opportunities provided by the Trust and your union. FOR TEACHERS The Trust's Effective Teaching Program has been providing professional development opportunities to NYSUT members for over 25 years. ETP courses and workshops are taught by practicing teachers and focus on applications of current research to provide teachers with an increased repertoire of instructional strategies that can be immediately applied in the classroom. ETP courses and workshops are scheduled at times convenient to teachers and are offered at discounted rates. The courses can be used to meet certification requirements, can be applied directly to master's degree programs through partnering institutions of higher education, and contribute to your overall professional knowledge. If you have 10 people interested in a course or a workshop, contact ETP to have that course or workshop delivered to your district. FOR PARAPROFESSIONALS The NYSUT Education and Learning Trust (ELT) is collaborating with colleges across the state to offer an 18-credit Undergraduate Program for Paraprofessionals. The program is designed for teaching assistants seeking New York State certification; paraprofessionals with instructional duties in schools operating Title I programs and those interested in eventually pursuing a degree in teaching. The programs allow for a smooth transition towards an associate's degree. A variety of teaching strategies are used including lecture and discussion, large and small group structured learning activities and journal writing. Where possible, participants will demonstrate the application of course content to classroom situations. ABOUT NYSUT New York State United Teachers is a federation of more than 900 local unions representing nearly 500,000 people who work in, or are retired from, New York's schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities.
